MIT Receives $140 Million From Anonymous Alumnus

June 7, 2017 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has received a $140 million gift from an anonymous donor, the university announced today.

The donor, a graduate of MIT, summarized the reason for the gift in a university news release:

“No one has ever made it through life without someone else’s help. As a past recipient of MIT’s generous financial aid, I benefited tremendously from the opportunity to pursue my MIT education and am extremely appreciative of all the ways that MIT has shaped me.”

The donation is unrestricted, meaning it can be used for any purpose. The university indicated that some of the money will support undergraduate students who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend MIT.
